Spring-Cleaning

The weather is getting warmer, the sun is shining, and the breeze is no longer cold. The flowers of the wild currant bush are starting to give off their captivating scent. I have been cleaning the terrace today. Time for another little spring poem:

Cleaning the garden chairs

Jumping spider, jump away!

Don’t want to kill you

So like my last spring poem, it is about an arthropod again. I don’t know why people don’t like them. They deserve more poems. I see little animals coming out everywhere now, spiders and insects and worms. Like them and spring becomes more beautiful.

Juming spiders are actually very fascinating animals. For an animal of this minute size, they are astonishingly smart. The more I learn about them, the more fascinating they become. I find them actually cute (although that does not really show on a magnified picture like this):

    • Some of them are creepy, but jumping spider jump around with fast movements, and that gives them a very different feel. The one I saw on my garden chair today looked nice. (O.K., in close up, they look like monsters, which they are from the point of view of their prey πŸ™‚ )

      • Of course that was “you can have the…”. I grant you that spiders have a unique grace, some of them quite intriguing, but yes! they look like monsters! Thank you! I am messing with you. πŸ™‚

        • They are fascinating, anyway. Jumping spiders are the animals with the largest brain in relation to body size, as far as I know, a lot of their body is filled with brain. Some species can kind of plan their action. If they spot a prey, they sit looking for a while, obviously searching for a path. Then they walk that path quite quickly. This can involve climbing a bush and taking the right parting of ways to arrive on a place from where they can jump or a place above the pray from where they can abseil themselves onto it. Quite astonishing for such a small beast. Dangerous and fascinating, like the alien in the film πŸ™‚

  1. That these animals are ugly or disgusting is an as-if-construction, but I don’t want to drive anybody out of it. I just recommend it πŸ™‚
By stepping out of this “as-if-bubble”, one can gain a lot of beauty in the world because many of these critters are beautiful in their way (or at least fascinating), and there are lots of them.
