For the untrained western ear the beauty of this music might not be immediately accessible. To me, however, it is magic. The soft, buzzing and noisy sound of this Mbira is like wind whispering in the trees. Rough and mellow, exciting and meditative at the same time.
I am not sure anybody today is still playing like this. And I am not sure instruments like this are still being made or being used. There is a renaissance of Mbira music today, but this old recording has something very special missing from a lot of today’s Mbira music.
